As the VP of Clinical Strategy & Population Health, you’ll be responsible for designing the clinical foundation of Arlo’s health plans—making care more affordable, accessible, and high-quality for our members nationwide. You’ll work across product, actuarial, and operations functions to define population health strategies, develop partnerships with providers, and build models that deliver better outcomes at lower costs.

The Opportunity
As Head of Data, you own Arlo’s most critical engineering infrastructure: the underwriting system that prices our risk and drives our growth and profitability. The core of the job is iterating on the underlying model and business logic quickly — testing new approaches and reacting to market shifts like GLP-1 drugs or emerging cancer treatments.
Our underwriting system sits on top of a multi-billion-row claims database. It allows for efficient training of large scale machine learning models, but it also has to serve inference results with low latency. You’ll own this system end to end: data ingestion, model iteration, backtesting, and serving results via API to our quoting frontend. You’ll work closely with Sean Chin, our Head Actuary, to translate business and modelling priorities into what the data team builds next. You will make architectural decisions and be the technical leader for the data engineering and data science team.
Data sits at the core of everything we do — unsurprising for a company founded by an ex-Palantir engineer. We use it to surface care gaps and trigger member outreach, identify fraudulent billing, develop cost-containment strategies, and evaluate doctor quality so our members find the best care. About You

About the Role
We’re looking for Principal Software Engineers to help build the systems that power an AI-native insurance company.
Insurance operations are sprawling: underwriting, claims, premium finance, broker operations, member support, care navigation, and more. Most companies run these functions through fragmented vendors, legacy software, and manual workflows. At Arlo, we build our own infrastructure.

As an Account Manager, you’ll be the first line of support for brokers and the employers they serve — answering questions, solving problems, and making sure they feel confident and well-supported at every stage of their journey with Arlo. As a Sr. Underwriting Ops Associate, you will operate at the intersection of data science, underwriting operations, and sales operations. You will be responsible for the operational integrity of our underwriting process, ensuring that quotes generated by our data science models are supported by accurate inputs, sound risk judgment, and reliable execution.
You will serve as the operational steward of our highly-automated, end-to-end underwriting workflow. Working hand in hand with our underwriting system, you will be validating data inputs, approving quotes within authority, monitoring funnel performance, and partnering with sales and operations teams to resolve issues as they arise.
Review and approve RFPs within our established underwriting authority; escalate borderline, complex, or out-of-range submissions
Validate inputs derived from broker submissions and external documentation; correct errors directly where appropriate and escalate systemic issues to the data science team for resolution.
Monitor underwriting funnel performance, including quote volume, close ratios, quote-to-bind conversion, and broker and segment mix; identify and communicate the drivers behind observed trends.

About the Role
We’re looking for Staff Software Engineers to help build the systems that power an AI-native insurance company.

We are building an AI-native health plan and need to build several functions, capabilities and teams over the course of the next few months and years. Your role will be to beachhead these initiatives, bring them from 0 to 1 and set them up for success. You will be working directly with Arlo's founders to act as a thought partner, lead strategic, cross-functional projects and spin up new functions. Here are some example projects you would be leading:
Design and drive key marketing experiments
Setup a clinical team
Architect partnerships with key distribution partners
Setup an insurance captive company
Execute on Strategic Projects: Plan and execute key initiatives in close collaboration with Arlo's founders
Spin up new functions: Design, build and operationalize new functions (prototype & run new processes/ capabilities, define new team roles, manage transition from \"prototype into production\")
Recruit, Onboard and Scale new Teams: You will be working closely with Arlo's talent lead to ensure your new functions are properly staffed. onboarded and can thrive moving forward.
Strategic Support: Support founders with planning, decision making and operational follow-through
5+ years of experience in a high-intensity settings (consulting, investment banking, high growth startup, etc.)
Ability to operate as a generalist and learn extremely fast to dive deep into a topic (T-shaped profile).

About the role:
Underwriting is at the core of Arlo. Every group we price depends on how accurately we can estimate the risk of the individual members inside, and the quality of the estimate is essential to the sustainability of our business. We’re hiring a Senior Data Scientist to own our underwriting model and continuously deploy measurable improvements to it based on learnings from real-world outcomes. You’ll work with billions of claims across tens of millions of patients to identify what signals in claims history predict future medical cost, how to roll it up to a competitive price for a group, and how to deploy the system at scale. You’ll constantly monitor the lifecycle of predictions, group policies sold, and claims incurred by our tens of thousands of members to gather novel insights that can improve our model and pricing approach.
This is a hands-on modeling role in which you will sit on the underwriting team alongside our team of data scientists and actuaries thinking through issues beyond point estimates of cost including how to handle data blindness, variability, and when the risk is too high to issue a quote. You’ll own the model but work alongside ML engineers to ensure that your ideas can be tested and deployed at scale.
What you’ll work on:
Evaluate the existing Arlo underwriting model and find where it breaks
Develop a robust evaluation framework to stress the model outcomes and identify specific gaps in risk estimates (cohorts, conditions, or claims patterns) and the underlying causal factors
Use those findings to generate a roadmap of model and feature work that is prioritized based on making sure our rates are competitive in the market while ensuring we can remain a profitable business.
Build features that capture the full risk of a member
Account for training and inference dataset bias to optimize member predictions
Improve handling of member cost variance in our quoting pipeline
Experiment with model designs
Implement different ML architectures that balance efficacy, generalizability, and understanding so we can outperform the market
Prove the lift before it ships
Work with our backtesting harness to measure the effect of every model change on MLR and competitiveness.
Set the bar for what \"better\" means and hold changes to it, so improvements to the model are trustworthy
What we’re looking for:
5+ years as a data scientist building predictive models that made it into production
Deep proficiency in Python and SQL, with comfort processing large datasets using Spark and using common modeling packages.
A track record of owning a problem end-to-end in an ambiguous environment and shipping without being handed a spec
Direct experience with healthcare data
Strong instincts for feature engineering and model validation, and the judgment of how well results might be able to hold in production
Interest in the larger business context. This is not a research endeavor, but a live model that directly changes our win rates, book size, and performance.
Clear communicator who can explain what they did and why it mattered
Nice to Have:
Familiarity with claims data and their known quirks and biases
Prior experience working at Series C or earlier start-ups
Background in underwriting, actuarial sciences, or risk adjustments
