The operating mode is simple: find the fastest path to learning, ship it, then standardize and clean up. The Growth team ships in weeks what other teams might take months to do.

Two of our exciting projects right now:

Agent-forward experience. We're exploring how agents and AI can make the experience better for our customers and demonstrate the value of Close faster. Our focus is helping users get real value from the product, not just automating on their behalf.

Creating data from unstructured sources. We're building ways to turn the information customers already have, like their inbox, into a working CRM, so they can skip the manual data entry and see value from Close faster.

One thing to know up front: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close.

You are

A seasoned frontend engineer. React is our bread and butter, but perhaps you've worked across Vue, Svelte, or Solid. You pick the right tool for the problem rather than retreating to what you know. You've seen a variety of problems, can collaborate and self-direct.

Fluent in experimentation. You understand what data points to capture in an experiment, what a funnel looks like, and how to design a feature so it produces meaningful data — not just ship it and hope. This is the core of the role.

Experienced with B2B experiment structure. A strong bonus: you've worked in Amplitude on the implementation side, not just the technical configuration side.

Building AI-powered interfaces. You've shipped LLM-backed features for real users and have an opinion on where they're trustworthy, where they fall over, and how to make them feel reliable. You'll own the UI layer that makes an agent feel like a trainer instead of a chat window — and help find the balance between the agent doing everything and the user learning enough to make Close's workflow their own.

Turn an inbox into a CRM. Build the experience around our unstructured-data pipeline: a user connects their email, and we surface detected deals, contacts, and a full book of business. Your job is making that moment feel like magic — and making it trustworthy enough to act on.

Design experiments, not just features. Decide what to instrument, define the funnel, and structure metrics so a B2B reality (org-level conversion, user-level behavior) still yields clean answers. You'll own this in Amplitude end to end.

Work across the whole app. Growth doesn't stay in its lane — onboarding, activation, billing, import, and whatever surface the next experiment needs. The Growth team experiments touch every aspect of the product.

Move at learning speed. Fastest path to insight first, then standardize and clean up. You'll ship in weeks what elsewhere takes months, and help decide which prototypes deserve to become permanent.

Have ownership and autonomy. The team is relatively new. Now we’re building AI into every part of it, so Close does the busywork and your team does the selling. No manual data entry, no 10-click workflows. Just communication-first, AI-powered sales software designed to help you succeed and scale.\n\nWe're bootstrapped and profitable which means we answer to our customers and play by our rules. We're proud of our 120-person, 100% remote team, focused on building Close so that no small, scaling business fails because it can't figure out sales.\n\n\n\n\nOUR STACK\n\nOur frontend is a single-page TypeScript web app built in React. We bundle with Vite and target modern browsers only. We test with Vitest, React Testing Library, Playwright, and Chromatic for visual regression. Our UI updates in near real-time using WebSockets and WebRTC, is styled via CSS modules, and is performance-tuned with route-based code splitting and skeleton UI. We've built our own design system, documented in an extensive Storybook.\n\nWe sweat the UI/UX details and work collaboratively with Product throughout the design process - from lo-fi wireframes through Figma and into code. Our frontend is built on top of our REST API and GraphQL endpoints, backed by a Python/Flask/FastAPI, MongoDB, Postgres and Elasticsearch stack running on AWS.\n\nWe love open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub https://github.com/closeio and on The Making of Close https://making.close.com/, our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. This is a transformation we’re embracing and find deeply exciting.\n\n \n\n\nABOUT THE ROLE\n\nThe Growth team owns the surfaces that turn someone who just signed up into a paying customer who sticks around — onboarding, activation, billing and checkout. The operating mode is simple: find the fastest path to learning, ship it, then standardize and clean up. The Growth team ships in weeks what other teams might take months to do.\n\nTwo of our exciting projects right now:\n\n - Agent-forward experience. We're exploring how agents and AI can make the experience better for our customers and demonstrate the value of Close faster. Our focus is helping users get real value from the product, not just automating on their behalf.\n\n - Creating data from unstructured sources. We're building ways to turn the information customers already have, like their inbox, into a working CRM, so they can skip the manual data entry and see value from Close faster.\n\nOne thing to know up front: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close.\n\n\n\n\nYOU ARE\n\n - A seasoned frontend engineer. React is our bread and butter, but perhaps you've worked across Vue, Svelte, or Solid. You pick the right tool for the problem rather than retreating to what you know. You've seen a variety of problems, can collaborate and self-direct.\n\n - Fluent in experimentation. You understand what data points to capture in an experiment, what a funnel looks like, and how to design a feature so it produces meaningful data — not just ship it and hope. This is the core of the role.\n\n - Experienced with B2B experiment structure. A strong bonus: you've worked in Amplitude on the implementation side, not just the technical configuration side.\n\n - Building AI-powered interfaces. You've shipped LLM-backed features for real users and have an opinion on where they're trustworthy, where they fall over, and how to make them feel reliable. You know how to design for streamed responses, uncertain states, and agent-driven UIs.\n\n - Working with AI daily. You use AI tools in your own workflow to ship faster, write tighter code, and reason about unfamiliar parts of the codebase. We fund the use of AI tools (Claude Code, Codex, and other best-in-class developer tools) and treat learning and experimentation as part of the work.\n\n - A builder first. You'd rather get the first iteration of a feature in front of fifty customers than spend three weeks fretting over a perfect PR. You ship — and you're comfortable standardizing and cleaning up after the learning lands.\n\n\n\n\nYOU WILL\n\n - Build agent-forward onboarding. An agent that teaches by doing: clicking around, highlighting, demonstrating the app while it talks to the user. You'll own the UI layer that makes an agent feel like a trainer instead of a chat window — and help find the balance between the agent doing everything and the user learning enough to make Close's workflow their own.\n\n - Turn an inbox into a CRM. Build the experience around our unstructured-data pipeline: a user connects their email, and we surface detected deals, contacts, and a full book of business. Your job is making that moment feel like magic — and making it trustworthy enough to act on.\n\n - Design experiments, not just features. Decide what to instrument, define the funnel, and structure metrics so a B2B reality (org-level conversion, user-level behavior) still yields clean answers. You'll own this in Amplitude end to end.\n\n - Work across the whole app. Growth doesn't stay in its lane — onboarding, activation, billing, import, and whatever surface the next experiment needs. The Growth team experiments touch every aspect of the product.\n\n - Move at learning speed. Fastest path to insight first, then standardize and clean up. You'll ship in weeks what elsewhere takes months, and help decide which prototypes deserve to become permanent.\n\n - Have ownership and autonomy. The team is relatively new. How Growth frontend engineering works at Close is, in part, yours to shape.\n\nTech you'll touch: TypeScript, React, Vite, Amplitude, CSS Modules, Storybook, Playwright, WebSockets — plus the agent stack behind Chloe.\n\n\n\n\nBENEFITS\n\n - Compensation: Competitive pay plus an organization-wide goal-based bonus\n\n - Paid Time Off: ~5 weeks of PTO to start. Plus a 1-week all-company Winter Holiday Break and paid US holidays. You'll earn 2 extra days for every year you're with Close.\n\n - 80% Work Option: Work with your manager to choose between a standard 5-day week or a 4-day week at 80% pay\n\n - Parental Leave: Paid leave for primary and secondary caregivers\n\n - Sabbatical: A 1-month paid sabbatical every 5 years with the team\n\n - Healthcare (US residents): Two medical plans with Close covering 99% of your premium, plus Dental, Vision, HSA, FSA, and company-paid Long-Term Disability\n\n - 401k (US residents): We match your contributions up to 6%, vested immediately\n\n\nOUR VALUES\n\nBuild a house you want to live in - Examine long-term thinking and action\n\nNo BS - Practice transparency and honesty, especially when it’s hard\n\nInvest in each other - Build successful relationships with your coworkers and customers\n\nDiscipline equals freedom - Keep your word to yourself and others\n\nStrive for greatness - Constantly challenge yourself and others\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE\n\nListen to our CEO and Founder, Steli Efti, tell the story of Close’s journey in the $0-30m Blueprint https://www.close.com/blueprint. \n\nWatch our culture video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maXKi1GN2MI from our 2023 team retreat in Milan. You ship.\n\n - Opinionated about UI craft and component design. You've built reusable systems that other engineers loved using, and you think about who's on the other end — sales reps in the middle of a call, power users who live in the keyboard, and customers who just need it to work.\n\n - Battle-tested. You've debugged performance regressions in production, owned a component library everyone else relied on, or shipped a high-stakes release where the UX had to be right under real customer pressure.\n\n\n\n\nBENEFITS\n\n - Compensation: Competitive pay plus an organization-wide goal-based bonus\n\n - Paid Time Off: ~5 weeks of PTO to start. We're proud of our 120-person, 100% remote team, focused on building Close so that no small, scaling business fails because it can't figure out sales.\n\n \n\n\nOUR STACK\n\nOur backend tech stack consists primarily of Python Flask web apps with our TaskTiger https://github.com/closeio/tasktiger scheduler handling many of the backend asynchronous task processing chores. Our data stores include MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis. The underlying infrastructure runs on AWS using a combination of managed services like EKS, MSK, RDS and ElastiCache and non-managed services running on EC2 instances. We have CI/CD pipelines that build Docker images, run automated tests and deploy to Kubernetes clusters. We also use these images in our local development environment allowing coding locally against all of our services. We have a well-documented public API https://developer.close.com/ that is consumed by our front-end JavaScript app as well as numerous integrations. Our infrastructure is heavily automated using Terraform, Ansible and other AWS tools. \n\nWe love open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub https://github.com/closeio and on The Making of Close https://making.close.com/, our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. Each time a call is logged, an email is threaded, a meeting is summarized, it lands on the record this team owns, and every agent we ship starts there.\n\nToday, this team is making big moves towards the next iteration of Close's core data model, our largest engineering effort currently underway. We're reopening assumptions made a decade ago and asking what a modern CRM's data model should look like — one that makes Close flexible for our small, scaling business customers. This is a long series of migrations and rearchitecture projects. If you like greenfield and you like hairy, this is both: help design the next version of Close, and untangle the current one.\n\nOne thing to know: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close — this team is where you'd start, but over time you'll likely have the opportunity to work on many different projects.\n\n\n\n\nYOU ARE\n\n - A seasoned engineer. Python is our backbone, but perhaps you've worked across Go, Rust, or TypeScript. You pick the right tool for the workload rather than retreating to what you know.\n\n - Architecturally minded. This is the thing we care about most. You've designed systems others built on, planned a migration that couldn't take the product down, and know how to sequence a rearchitecture into pieces that ship independently.\n\n - Drawn to data model and retrieval problems. Schemas, relationships, normalization, query design, type systems. Elasticsearch especially, and anything adjacent: Lucene internals, query planning, relevance, indexing at scale, building or operating a search engine.\n\n - AI-native in production. You've shipped meaningful LLM-backed or agentic features to real users, and you have a POV on where AI earns its place in a CRM workflow and where a structured system wins.\n\n - Working with AI in your day-to-day. You use AI tools in your own workflow to ship faster, write tighter code, and reason about unfamiliar parts of the codebase. We fund best-in-class developer tools and treat experimentation as part of the work.\n\n - Battle-tested. You've debugged incidents where latency budgets didn't hold, owned a system everyone else relied on, or carried a pager for something with real customer impact.\n\n - A builder first. You'd rather get a sloppy v1 in front of fifty customers than spend three weeks on abstractions. You ship.\n\n\n\n\nYOU WILL\n\n - Rearchitect the core CRM data model. Rework how leads, contacts, opportunities, and custom objects relate to each other so each of our customers can represent their business the way it operates.\n\n - Make Close usable by agents. This is a transformation we’re embracing and find deeply exciting.

About the Role

Close runs on Python: Flask web apps, TaskTiger, billions of MongoDB documents, a public REST API that customers and external agents both build on. Four product teams ship features on top of that every week. Backend Platforms owns the foundation underneath it all.

As an Engineer on our Backend Platforms team, you’re building for other engineers. When a product team adds a new API endpoint, most of what they write isn't their feature — it's wiring: authentication, permissions, rate limiting, the shape the endpoint has to take so it looks like every other endpoint when you squint. Multiply that across telemetry, eventing, database migrations, authorization, and local development, and you get the problem this team exists to solve: make the paved road faster to walk than the trail.

The other half of the team's mandate is the AI development platform. We've built DevDawg, cloud-based development environments preconfigured for our entire application stack and our engineering practices, and Spice, our extension layer on top of a coding agent that runs internal review workflows and root cause analysis. Spice is hooked into GitHub and can already approve mergeable pull requests on its own for simple changes. This team is responsible for expanding what it can safely handle.

This is a new team. You would be one of the first hires, and you'd have unusual influence over what the team owns and how it operates.

One thing to know: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close — this team is where you'd start, but over time you'll likely have the opportunity to work on many different projects.

This role is open at the Senior and Staff levels. You don't need to pick one when you apply: we'll calibrate together during the process.

You are

A seasoned Python engineer. Python is our backbone and it matters in this role more than on other teams at Close. Architectural patterns don't port cleanly between languages, and you'll be setting the patterns. Go, Rust, or TypeScript alongside it is welcome.

Drawn to meta-problems. This team doesn't ship features to customers; it changes how features get built.

AI-native in production. You've shipped meaningful LLM-backed or agentic work to real users. You'll talk to them directly instead of through a PM, and you'll use most of what you build yourself.

You will

Expand DevDawg and Spice. Cloud development environments for our full stack, paired with automated review and root-cause tooling that can approve real pull requests. Now we’re building AI into every part of it, so Close does the busywork and your team does the selling. No manual data entry, no 10-click workflows. Just communication-first, AI-powered sales software designed to help you succeed and scale.\n\nWe're bootstrapped and profitable which means we answer to our customers and play by our rules. We're proud of our 120-person, 100% remote team, focused on building Close so that no small, scaling business fails because it can't figure out sales.\n\n \n\n\nOUR STACK\n\nOur backend tech stack consists primarily of Python Flask web apps with our TaskTiger https://github.com/closeio/tasktiger scheduler handling many of the backend asynchronous task processing chores. Our data stores include MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis. The underlying infrastructure runs on AWS using a combination of managed services like EKS, MSK, RDS and ElastiCache and non-managed services running on EC2 instances. We have CI/CD pipelines that build Docker images, run automated tests and deploy to Kubernetes clusters. We also use these images in our local development environment allowing coding locally against all of our services. We have a well-documented public API https://developer.close.com/ that is consumed by our front-end JavaScript app as well as numerous integrations. Our infrastructure is heavily automated using Terraform, Ansible and other AWS tools. \n\nWe love open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub https://github.com/closeio and on The Making of Close https://making.close.com/, our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. Check out our open source projects like SocketShark https://github.com/closeio/socketshark, TaskTiger https://github.com/closeio/tasktiger, LimitLion https://github.com/closeio/limitlion and ciso8601 https://github.com/closeio/ciso8601.\n\nAI is both how we build and what we ship, and that's reshaped what engineering looks like. This is a transformation we’re embracing and find deeply exciting. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE ROLE\n\nClose runs on Python: Flask web apps, TaskTiger, billions of MongoDB documents, a public REST API that customers and external agents both build on. Four product teams ship features on top of that every week. Backend Platforms owns the foundation underneath it all.\n\nAs an Engineer on our Backend Platforms team, you’re building for other engineers. When a product team adds a new API endpoint, most of what they write isn't their feature — it's wiring: authentication, permissions, rate limiting, the shape the endpoint has to take so it looks like every other endpoint when you squint. Multiply that across telemetry, eventing, database migrations, authorization, and local development, and you get the problem this team exists to solve: make the paved road faster to walk than the trail.\n\nThe other half of the team's mandate is the AI development platform. We've built DevDawg, cloud-based development environments preconfigured for our entire application stack and our engineering practices, and Spice, our extension layer on top of a coding agent that runs internal review workflows and root cause analysis. Spice is hooked into GitHub and can already approve mergeable pull requests on its own for simple changes. This team is responsible for expanding what it can safely handle.\n\nThis is a new team. You would be one of the first hires, and you'd have unusual influence over what the team owns and how it operates.\n\nOne thing to know: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close — this team is where you'd start, but over time you'll likely have the opportunity to work on many different projects.\n\nThis role is open at the Senior and Staff levels. You don't need to pick one when you apply: we'll calibrate together during the process.\n\n\n\n\nYOU ARE\n\n - A seasoned Python engineer. Python is our backbone and it matters in this role more than on other teams at Close. Architectural patterns don't port cleanly between languages, and you'll be setting the patterns. Go, Rust, or TypeScript alongside it is welcome.\n\n - Drawn to meta-problems. This team doesn't ship features to customers; it changes how features get built.\n\n - AI-native in production. You've shipped meaningful LLM-backed or agentic work to real users. For a team building AI tooling that other engineers depend on, this is foundational to the role.\n\n - Working with AI in your day-to-day. You use coding agents in your own workflow and have a real POV on where they help and where they get in the way. On this team, your POV becomes the product. We fund best-in-class developer tools and treat experimentation as part of the work.\n\n - Fluent in observability and production practice. Telemetry, metrics, tracing, alerting, Sentry ownership, what production-ready actually means. You've been the person who made a system legible when it broke.\n\n - Opinionated about API design. You've shipped internet-facing APIs and you think about who's on the other end — apps, agents, humans reading docs — and what each needs.\n\n - Battle-tested. You've debugged incidents where latency budgets didn't hold, owned a system everyone else relied on, or carried a pager for something with real customer impact.\n\n - A builder first. You'd rather get a rough v1 in front of five engineers than spend three weeks on abstractions.\n\n - Energized by internal customers. Your users are a Slack DM away. You'll talk to them directly instead of through a PM, and you'll use most of what you build yourself.\n\n\nYOU WILL\n\n - Expand DevDawg and Spice. Cloud development environments for our full stack, paired with automated review and root-cause tooling that can approve real pull requests. Making that safe enough to cover more of our review surface is one of the team's biggest projects.\n\n - Build the paved roads for our API layer. REST blueprints, GraphQL schema, OpenAPI, realtime, and the auth and permission plumbing that every endpoint needs. Consistent patterns are what make shared utilities possible.\n\n - Modernize the backend framework layer. Web and async compute frameworks, performance, and migration paths (Flask → FastAPI, among others) — with clear defaults, examples, and migrations teams can adopt without asking permission.\n\n - Own how we see production. Observability, metrics, alerting, and the readiness bar teams meet before shipping. When the same issues keep showing up in incident reviews, you make sure the underlying cause gets owned rather than re-triaged.\n\n - Ship shared backend services and primitives. Eventing patterns and the event log, database-change safety and migration guardrails, delegated access and auditability, the internal admin framework and support-facing APIs.\n\n - Set the guardrails for coding agents in our backend. Static analysis, linting, hooks, test harnesses — the constraints that make agent-written code safe to merge at volume.\n\n - Partner across the org. Infrastructure owns the substrate (AWS, Kubernetes, datastores); you own the application layer on top.\n\nTech you'll touch: Python, Flask, FastAPI, GraphQL, TaskTiger, Rust, Typescript, Kafka, Redis, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions — plus whatever coding agent ships next.\n\n\n\n\nBENEFITS\n\n - Compensation: Competitive pay plus an organization-wide goal-based bonus\n\n - Paid Time Off: ~5 weeks of PTO to start. Plus a 1-week all-company Winter Holiday Break and paid US holidays. You'll earn 2 extra days for every year you're with Close.\n\n - 80% Work Option: Work with your manager to choose between a standard 5-day week or a 4-day week at 80% pay\n\n - Parental Leave: Paid leave for primary and secondary caregivers\n\n - Sabbatical: A 1-month paid sabbatical every 5 years with the team\n\n - Healthcare (US residents): Two medical plans with Close covering 99% of your premium, plus Dental, Vision, HSA, FSA, and company-paid Long-Term Disability\n\n - 401k (US residents): We match your contributions up to 6%, vested immediately\n\n\nOUR VALUES\n\nBuild a house you want to live in - Examine long-term thinking and action\n\nNo BS - Practice transparency and honesty, especially when it’s hard\n\nInvest in each other - Build successful relationships with your coworkers and customers\n\nDiscipline equals freedom - Keep your word to yourself and others\n\nStrive for greatness - Constantly challenge yourself and others\n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE\n\nListen to our CEO and Founder, Steli Efti, tell the story of Close’s journey in the $0-30m Blueprint https://www.close.com/blueprint. \n\nWatch our culture video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maXKi1GN2MI from our 2023 team retreat in Milan. These questions are designed to help us learn more about you from the start, so please answer each one thoughtfully. We see this as an opportunity to get to know you beyond your resume.\n\nWe use AI tools daily at Close and expect candidates to do the same. In evaluating your application, we aim to get a sense for you - the way you think, how you communicate, the work you've done. Applications that read as fully AI-generated will not be considered.\n\nRegardless of fit, you can expect to hear back from our team with an update on the status of your candidacy.\n\nIf you progress to the interview process, you'll receive a full outline of the role-specific steps in your first touchpoint with us. We do our best to make the hiring process clear and human.","compensation":{"compensationTierSummary":null,"scrapeableCompensationSalarySummary":null,"compensationTiers":[],"summaryComponents":[]}}],"apiVersion":"1"}
