As a Service Delivery Manager, you play an important role in advancing the mission of Astronomer’s Professional Services team, helping accelerate and de-risk customer outcomes by ensuring delivery engagements run smoothly and remain focused on meaningful progress.

About the Role
We are seeking an exceptional Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership, architectural vision, and team mentorship for our core engineering group. In this role, you will be the primary architect and public face of a cloud-agnostic software platform that helps enterprise customers provision, scale, and orchestrate Apache Airflow instances completely on-premises within their own environments.
This is a unique infrastructure challenge: our platform is designed to be completely self-contained, operating without reliance on an external SaaS backbone or mandatory outbound communication. Both our control plane and data planes deploy locally inside the customer’s infrastructure. You will lead the engineering team in defining, designing, and building these systems to function reliably across a spectrum of enterprise network setups—ranging from standard customer-managed clouds to strictly isolated, air-gapped environments.
What You'll Do
Define, Design, and Build Core Architecture: Own the end-to-end definition, design, and implementation of both the control plane and data plane services, creating highly resilient inter-connections between them to power this self-contained infrastructure platform.
Architect an Extensible Platform API: Drive the design, data modeling, versioning, and long-term backward compatibility of robust APIs (such as REST or gRPC). These APIs serve as the core platform engine that power the customer-facing UI, and the developer endpoints for customer-facing programmatic integrations.
Design Comprehensive Platform Observability: Architect the telemetry framework (metrics, logs, and traces) for the self-contained platform itself, ensuring deep visibility into both the core control plane services and the performance, health, and status of the underlying Airflow instances it provisions.

Software Engineers on our Applications teams help build the product experience that customers use every day on Astro — from the web console and CLI to the APIs, workflows, and features that make Airflow easier to use, monitor, and manage. The team owns the problems that make Astro a great product: usability, performance, reliability, and the day-to-day feature work that turns customer needs into shipped software across our web application, backend services, and APIs.
We're looking for a Software Engineer to help build and ship that product — on our core web application, our backend services, or both; your specific team will be determined later in the interview process based on need and fit. You'll get hands-on experience with full-stack development, API design, and production feature delivery from day one — with the guidance of senior engineers as you build toward independent ownership. Apache Airflow is one of the most popular open-source data platform tools. It powers the data platforms at nearly every large company and fast-growing startups: Airbnb, Uber, OpenAI, Anthropic, Nike, Capital One, Disney all use Airflow extensively. At Astronomer, we’re the largest contributors to the project and are building commercial products around Airflow to make it easier to use, run, and scale.
We’re in a unique position: as the company behind Apache Airflow, we see data as it moves across entire organizations—from raw ingestion to production dashboards, machine learning models, and AI products. Leveraging this vantage point, our R&D team is developing a global context layer for data—an intelligence layer that powers search and discovery, code generation for data and analytics, and automated root cause analysis. LLMs are already quite good at writing Python and SQL code against data platforms; we think this context layer will give them the metadata necessary for data practitioners everywhere to use LLMs effectively.
As a Software Engineer on this team, you’ll help design and build this foundation and the applications around it. You’ll work on some of the hardest and most exciting challenges in data—search, information retrieval, and AI for data pracitioners—while collaborating with a small, highly skilled team that values velocity, creativity, and impact. About This Role
Senior and Staff Software Engineers on our Infrastructure team own the architecture of the systems that stand up, configure, and manage the infrastructure the underlying Airflows run on. This includes the security of those systems and the reliability and observability capabilities that keep Astro running at scale, across both Astronomer's multi-tenant cloud platform and Astro Private Cloud, our self-hosted distribution for regulated organizations running Airflow in their own private clouds or fully isolated data centers.
You'll design and build the control-plane services, the APIs that drive infrastructure lifecycle management, and the control/data-plane interaction patterns that make it possible to bring up and manage that infrastructure — including how those interactions hold up across network topologies from standard private cloud to zero-egress, air-gapped environments.
You'll bring deep, hands-on expertise in distributed systems, API design, and infrastructure lifecycle management, own the technical direction, design, and implementation of key areas of the platform, and mentor engineers earlier in their careers. What You'll Do
Design and own the architecture of the systems that stand up, scale, and manage the infrastructure Airflow runs on, leading these efforts end-to-end (design, implementation, tests, documentation, and rollout).
Design and evolve the APIs (REST/gRPC) that drive infrastructure lifecycle management, powering customer-facing UI and programmatic integrations, including data modeling, versioning, and backward compatibility.
Own the networking and security posture of these systems, including how they authenticate, authorize, and communicate securely, and drive CVE remediation, image hardening, and Pod Security Standards compliance.
Architect observability and traceability across the stack: metrics, logs, and traces that let a request be followed end-to-end across service and network boundaries.
Participate in on-call rotation, contributing to incident diagnosis, resolution, and post-mortems for these systems and ensuring remediation items are tracked into sprints.
Mentor engineers and raise the bar on design and code review, testing, and operational rigor.
What You'll Bring
5+ years of experience in infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering, with a track record of owning production systems at scale (8+ years typical for Staff).
Deep, hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, including building custom Operators/CRDs and managing Helm-based deployments for infrastructure lifecycle workflows.
Experience designing APIs (REST or gRPC) that serve as the core engine behind a customer-facing UI or programmatic integrations, including versioning and backward compatibility.
Strong systems fundamentals: networking, distributed systems, reliability engineering, and security best practices.

We’re looking for a Software Engineer to our Core Platform team, where you’ll work on core systems that power Astro’s Public API, authentication, billing, alerting frameworks, and ensure the platform is reliable, scalable, and maintainable.

Contribute to the development of Astro Platform's architecture and components, through implementation and architectural participation.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand user requirements, implement and iterate on features used in our product and by the engineering org as a whole.
Work with front end developers, product management and customers to deliver customer facing features such as public facing APIs and the technology behind Astro’s own infrastructure.
Contribute to the overall platform usability, reliability, and scalability.
A track record in building performant, scalable, and reliable backend systems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative mindset.
Experience in developing services with Go, interacting with dependencies and service orchestration on Kubernetes.
Familiarity with SQL databases (Postgres, with Spanner experience also a plus)
Advanced understanding of distributed systems concepts and NALSD.
Experience rationally leveraging AI coding assistants and LLMs (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Gemini) to accelerate development — from prototyping and automated testing to code refactoring and documentation.
Contributions to open source projects.
Experience with Apache Airflow or related workflow orchestrators.
Experience with critical business functions such as billing, authentication, and systems and practices around this area.
The estimated salary for this role ranges from $210,000 - $250,000 based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
