The job, as one of our AEs puts it, is closer to a mini-GM: you own a book of business, set your own commercials, and lead a cross-functional team to get deals closed and customers live.

Hear Freddie - one of our top Sellers - talk about selling at Heron here.

The opportunity

Huge untapped revenue potential: Heron is growing quickly and sales is still catching up to the potential of our product. We serve over 190 customers but that is still a tiny share of the market. You'll take real territory from day one and share in our growth via uncapped commission and equity.

Run your own book like a mini-GM: you'll own a book of accounts. We have playbooks for what works, but pricing and deal structure are yours to negotiate. Our deals move fast - you are typically selling to C-level; if you get a kick out of quick negotiations, you'll get the adrenaline without being the stereotypical 'pushy salesperson'.

The seat with the upside: as AI eats more software, distribution matters more, not less - and sales, done well, is usually the highest-paid job at any company. If you've been in a post-sales or deployment seat doing most of the stakeholder and technical work while someone else took home the commission, you already know how deals actually get done. Here, the upside is yours.

A team of outliers, not a sales mill: sales at Heron started with one of our founders (Jamie) personally closing dozens of customers. The sellers we've hired since came from strategy consulting, deployment, Product, and other non-traditional sales roles. They learned alternative finance fast and now close our largest deals. We're not hiring for a rolodex. And if you're weighing a career change into sales: make it here. You'll be working with people who made the same jump, the only part we can't supply is that you want to do it.

Personal growth opportunities: sales is the fastest route up at most companies. Depending on your ambitions, this role could develop into closing very large and complex deals, sales leadership, or owning go-to-market for one of our newer markets. And if you want to start your own company one day, running deals with product and engineering at your back is - we think - the best way to learn how to do it.

An environment where you can do your best work: we promote an outcome-focused, low-bureaucracy work environment with an emphasis on impact. We're ~60 people across New York and London, still lean, scrappy and committed to our customers. The ideal candidate will value and thrive in this type of environment.

Note: this is a sales role, so if you're applying, don't just send us your CV. Get creative and sell us on you!

What you'll do

Full sales cycle: as an Account Executive, you will handle the full sales cycle, including prospecting for and qualifying leads, and moving those leads through to close. You'll use a mix of high-volume outbound and more specific, account-based techniques.

Direct a cross-functional deal team: when you're working a large deal at Heron, you're effectively directing product, engineering and deployment around your customer. You'll interact with many prospects every day, build deep relationships with customers as they become users, and have a front-row seat and real input into what we build next.

Be present with our customers: working out of our New York office in Hudson Square, you'll be traveling regularly across the US to conferences, industry events and customer sites to ensure we are top of mind for decision makers in our customers. Our top sellers spend around 5 days a month in person with customers.

What we're looking for

We care more about slope than resume keywords. Our ideal hire will have:

A track record of excellence in a competitive, client-facing field: that might be 3+ years of B2B sales with strong quota attainment. It might equally be top-bucket performance in consulting, a post-sales or deployment seat at a technical company where you carried the real work of deals, or founding a company. Some of our best sellers had never carried a quota before Heron.

Evidence you can sell: if you've carried a number, show us the attainment. If you haven't, show us persuasion some other way: clients won, money raised, a side business built - or simply the application you send us (see the note above).

Product and people minded: you know how to enter an unfamiliar room, cut through the noise, and find where the value is - and you're comfortable selling a technical product (e.g. that uses APIs, AI/LLMs). You'll need to be credible with a head of underwriting and a CTO in the same meeting.

Entrepreneurial spirit: an ownership mindset, results-driven and the ability to move quickly.

Above all else, we value people who want to make an impact in their work. Here are some of the behaviours that we expect the ideal candidate will exhibit:

Be scrappy and creative: when faced with an obstacle, you will either overcome it by pure determination, or find an unusual approach to navigate it.

Be persistent: you may not always find the right answer or person immediately, but you're motivated to keep on trying until you do so. You'll go the extra mile - including showing up at their office - if that's what it takes.

Be metrics-driven: you thrive on meeting and smashing through your targets, and are motivated by having your impact on the business measured and visible.

Excited to work in a fast-paced, high-growth, but kind team-based environment: we aim to move quickly and decisively, but together. The job, as one of our AEs puts it, is closer to a mini-GM: you own a book of business, set your own commercials, and lead a cross-functional team to get deals closed and customers live. \n\nHear Freddie - one of our top Sellers - talk about selling at Heron here https://www.linkedin.com/posts/heron-data_sales-hiring-careers-activity-7474828814452457472-OlZC/.\n\n\n\n\nTHE OPPORTUNITY\n\n - Huge untapped revenue potential: Heron is growing quickly and sales is still catching up to the potential of our product. We serve over 190 customers but that is still a tiny share of the market. You'll take real territory from day one and share in our growth via uncapped commission and equity.\n\n - Run your own book like a mini-GM: you'll own a book of accounts. We have playbooks for what works, but pricing and deal structure are yours to negotiate. Our deals move fast - you are typically selling to C-level; if you get a kick out of quick negotiations, you'll get the adrenaline without being the stereotypical 'pushy salesperson'.\n\n - The seat with the upside: as AI eats more software, distribution matters more, not less - and sales, done well, is usually the highest-paid job at any company. If you've been in a post-sales or deployment seat doing most of the stakeholder and technical work while someone else took home the commission, you already know how deals actually get done. Here, the upside is yours.\n\n - A team of outliers, not a sales mill: sales at Heron started with one of our founders (Jamie) personally closing dozens of customers. The sellers we've hired since came from strategy consulting, deployment, Product, and other non-traditional sales roles. They learned alternative finance fast and now close our largest deals. We're not hiring for a rolodex. And if you're weighing a career change into sales: make it here. You'll be working with people who made the same jump, the only part we can't supply is that you want to do it.\n\n - Personal growth opportunities: sales is the fastest route up at most companies. Depending on your ambitions, this role could develop into closing very large and complex deals, sales leadership, or owning go-to-market for one of our newer markets. And if you want to start your own company one day, running deals with product and engineering at your back is - we think - the best way to learn how to do it.\n\n - An environment where you can do your best work: we promote an outcome-focused, low-bureaucracy work environment with an emphasis on impact. We're ~60 people across New York and London, still lean, scrappy and committed to our customers. The ideal candidate will value and thrive in this type of environment.\n\nNote: this is a sales role, so if you're applying, don't just send us your CV. Get creative and sell us on you!\n\n\n\n\nWHAT YOU'LL DO\n\n - Full sales cycle: as an Account Executive, you will handle the full sales cycle, including prospecting for and qualifying leads, and moving those leads through to close. You'll use a mix of high-volume outbound and more specific, account-based techniques.\n\n - Direct a cross-functional deal team: when you're working a large deal at Heron, you're effectively directing product, engineering and deployment around your customer. You'll interact with many prospects every day, build deep relationships with customers as they become users, and have a front-row seat and real input into what we build next.\n\n - Be present with our customers: working out of our New York office in Hudson Square, you'll be traveling regularly across the US to conferences, industry events and customer sites to ensure we are top of mind for decision makers in our customers. Our top sellers spend around 5 days a month in person with customers.\n\n\nWHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR\n\nWe care more about slope than resume keywords. Our ideal hire will have:\n\n - A track record of excellence in a competitive, client-facing field: that might be 3+ years of B2B sales with strong quota attainment. It might equally be top-bucket performance in consulting, a post-sales or deployment seat at a technical company where you carried the real work of deals, or founding a company. Some of our best sellers had never carried a quota before Heron.\n\n - Evidence you can sell: if you've carried a number, show us the attainment. If you haven't, show us persuasion some other way: clients won, money raised, a side business built - or simply the application you send us (see the note above).\n\n - Product and people minded: you know how to enter an unfamiliar room, cut through the noise, and find where the value is - and you're comfortable selling a technical product (e.g. that uses APIs, AI/LLMs). You'll need to be credible with a head of underwriting and a CTO in the same meeting.\n\n - Entrepreneurial spirit: an ownership mindset, results-driven and the ability to move quickly.\n\nAbove all else, we value people who want to make an impact in their work. Here are some of the behaviours that we expect the ideal candidate will exhibit:\n\n - Be scrappy and creative: when faced with an obstacle, you will either overcome it by pure determination, or find an unusual approach to navigate it.\n\n - Be persistent: you may not always find the right answer or person immediately, but you're motivated to keep on trying until you do so. You'll go the extra mile - including showing up at their office - if that's what it takes.\n\n - Be metrics-driven: you thrive on meeting and smashing through your targets, and are motivated by having your impact on the business measured and visible.\n\n - Excited to work in a fast-paced, high-growth, but kind team-based environment: we aim to move quickly and decisively, but together. You'll be a great team player, and do what it takes for the team to succeed. You value diversity and inclusion in the workplace and understand best practices for building products and a business as part of a team.\n\n\nWHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AS A HERON\n\n - Competitive compensation, including equity and uncapped commission. Please note that advertised salary is the expected OTE of base + commission, but we do not cap commission and you'll earn commission on every deal you work on.\n\n - Based full-time and in-person in our NYC office with frequent travel to customers (across the country) and roughly annual Company Offsites.\n\n - Your choice of top-of-the-line equipment to fit out your desk in our office\n\n - Competitive benefits package: health, dental, vision with partial coverage for dependents; 401K; uncapped PTO; parental leave\n\n - Free on-demand access to therapy via Spill\n\n - Weekly company lunches and breakfasts\n\n - Applicants from any background and gender are welcome and we have a zero tolerance policy on discrimination\n\n\nABOUT THE INTERVIEW\n\n 1. 1 or 2 initial 'get to know you' conversations\n\n 2. Take-home challenge - a task which roughly represents the work we would expect from you\n\n 3. Team interviews - 2-3 hours in-person, mix of skills-based and behavioural interviews\n\n 4. As we scale, we want someone who can take full ownership of these workflows and run them reliably and independently — becoming the person who owns how operational finance actually runs day to day.

The opportunity

Finance and BizOps are a central enabler at Heron. The function isn't a back office - it sits at the intersection of every team, and deep financial knowledge of the business is what lets us connect dots that aren't obvious from any single seat.

You'll be hands-on and exacting from day one: owning accounts receivable, getting billing right, reconciling burn and revenue. This is a finance-heavy, operational role - the work is in the details, and owning it well is the job. Over time, there's real room to grow: more scope as the company scales, ownership of how the whole operational finance function runs, and a front-row seat to the financial story we tell investors as we raise. You'll be in the finance mix of a fast-growing startup, with the chance to build something you own.

This is a role for someone who genuinely enjoys getting the details right and wants to own operational finance at a scaling startup - running finance operations exceptionally well, while also being a key partner on the forward-looking side (planning, budgeting, and pressure-testing the model).

What you'll do

Own accounts receivable end-to-end: billing is one of our most important and direct customer touchpoints, and getting it right protects both revenue and customer trust. You'll work cross-functionally to make sure every customer is billed correctly, run the month-end billing process, and own the AR function as it scales

Run month-end finance cycles: own burn calculation and reconciliation across our banking and spend stack, plus the data inputs that feed business reviews

Own revenue reporting investors can trust: reconcile billing and CRM data against our source of truth, untangle the messy edge cases, and build out the retention and revenue metrics (e.g. GRR, NRR, cohort views by segment) that show how the business is really performing and that go to our board and investors

Contextualize the numbers: understand where we're spending and investing as a company, and what the numbers mean in the broader context of the business

Support planning & FP&A: partner on our financial model, budgeting, and forecasting: pull together the inputs, pressure-test assumptions, and help translate the numbers into a forward view.

Automate the finance function: find the repetitive, manual work and build it away; help move us toward a finance function that scales without linearly adding headcount

Use AI deeply: you'll lean on AI heavily, both to automate finance work and to dig into how our product actually generates revenue, so the numbers always reflect what's really happening under the hood

What we're looking for

Our ideal hire started their career in accounting, finance, or banking and has since pivoted into a startup (2–5 years of experience). You genuinely enjoy the detail-oriented work of getting the numbers exactly right, even when it's painstaking. The best fit is someone who wants to own operational finance at a startup. That's who we picture in the seat - but if that's not quite you and you think you're right for it anyway, make the case for why we should take the bet. What matters most: you're excited to run finance operations exceptionally well, not impatient to skip past them.

Regardless of background, you'll be:

Detail-obsessed where it counts — you take real satisfaction in getting the numbers exactly right, and you don't drop the ball

A collaborative team player — you work well across functions and bring people along

Growth-minded — you want to stretch, learn, and grow into more over time

Eager to leverage AI — you're excited to be in a seat where you use AI heavily, both to automate and to understand the product and the business

Opinionated and able to back it up — you form a view and can defend it with evidence

Trustworthy with sensitive data — you'll handle the company's financials; we'll count on your judgment and care

What You Can Expect as a Heron

Competitive compensation, including equity

Based full-time in NYC, where the team works in-person

Your choice of top-of-the-line equipment to fit out your desk in the office

Occasional travel for retreats and to work with the team

Competitive benefits: health insurance; pension/401k; uncapped annual leave; parental leave

Free mental health support via Spill - on-demand access to therapy

Weekly company lunches (always inclusive and vegan-friendly - especially if you like Korean or Vietnamese food!)

Applicants from any background and gender are welcome and we have a zero tolerance policy on discrimination

About the interview

Initial screen (20 minutes) - conversation to discuss what you're looking for, what Heron offers, and to see if there's a good fit.

Take-home challenge and review (~3 hours in total) - a task which represents the work we would expect from you, followed by a review of the work with members of our team.

Team interviews (2-3 hours in total) - mix of technical and behavioral conversations with Heron teammates and founders. As we scale, we want someone who can take full ownership of these workflows and run them reliably and independently — becoming the person who owns how operational finance actually runs day to day.\n\n\n\n\nTHE OPPORTUNITY\n\nFinance and BizOps are a central enabler at Heron. The function isn't a back office - it sits at the intersection of every team, and deep financial knowledge of the business is what lets us connect dots that aren't obvious from any single seat.\n\nYou'll be hands-on and exacting from day one: owning accounts receivable, getting billing right, reconciling burn and revenue. This is a finance-heavy, operational role - the work is in the details, and owning it well is the job. Over time, there's real room to grow: more scope as the company scales, ownership of how the whole operational finance function runs, and a front-row seat to the financial story we tell investors as we raise. You'll be in the finance mix of a fast-growing startup, with the chance to build something you own.\n\nThis is a role for someone who genuinely enjoys getting the details right and wants to own operational finance at a scaling startup - running finance operations exceptionally well, while also being a key partner on the forward-looking side (planning, budgeting, and pressure-testing the model).\n\n\n\n\nWHAT YOU'LL DO\n\n - Own accounts receivable end-to-end: billing is one of our most important and direct customer touchpoints, and getting it right protects both revenue and customer trust. You'll work cross-functionally to make sure every customer is billed correctly, run the month-end billing process, and own the AR function as it scales\n\n - Run month-end finance cycles: own burn calculation and reconciliation across our banking and spend stack, plus the data inputs that feed business reviews\n\n - Own revenue reporting investors can trust: reconcile billing and CRM data against our source of truth, untangle the messy edge cases, and build out the retention and revenue metrics (e.g. GRR, NRR, cohort views by segment) that show how the business is really performing and that go to our board and investors\n\n - Contextualize the numbers: understand where we're spending and investing as a company, and what the numbers mean in the broader context of the business\n\n - Support planning & FP&A: partner on our financial model, budgeting, and forecasting: pull together the inputs, pressure-test assumptions, and help translate the numbers into a forward view.\n\n - Automate the finance function: find the repetitive, manual work and build it away; help move us toward a finance function that scales without linearly adding headcount\n\n - Use AI deeply: you'll lean on AI heavily, both to automate finance work and to dig into how our product actually generates revenue, so the numbers always reflect what's really happening under the hood\n\n\nWHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR\n\nOur ideal hire started their career in accounting, finance, or banking and has since pivoted into a startup (2–5 years of experience). What matters most: you're excited to run finance operations exceptionally well, not impatient to skip past them.\n\nRegardless of background, you'll be:\n\n - Detail-obsessed where it counts — you take real satisfaction in getting the numbers exactly right, and you don't drop the ball\n\n - A collaborative team player — you work well across functions and bring people along\n\n - Growth-minded — you want to stretch, learn, and grow into more over time\n\n - Eager to leverage AI — you're excited to be in a seat where you use AI heavily, both to automate and to understand the product and the business\n\n - Opinionated and able to back it up — you form a view and can defend it with evidence\n\n - Trustworthy with sensitive data — you'll handle the company's financials; we'll count on your judgment and care\n\n\nWHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AS A HERON\n\n - Competitive compensation, including equity\n\n - Based full-time in NYC, where the team works in-person\n\n - Your choice of top-of-the-line equipment to fit out your desk in the office\n\n - Occasional travel for retreats and to work with the team\n\n - Competitive benefits: health insurance; pension/401k; uncapped annual leave; parental leave\n\n - Free mental health support via Spill - on-demand access to therapy\n\n - Weekly company lunches (always inclusive and vegan-friendly - especially if you like Korean or Vietnamese food!)\n\n - Applicants from any background and gender are welcome and we have a zero tolerance policy on discrimination\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE INTERVIEW\n\n - Initial screen (20 minutes) - conversation to discuss what you're looking for, what Heron offers, and to see if there's a good fit.\n\n - Take-home challenge and review (~3 hours in total) - a task which represents the work we would expect from you, followed by a review of the work with members of our team.\n\n - Team interviews (2-3 hours in total) - mix of technical and behavioral conversations with Heron teammates and founders. You'll get a feel for the people you'll work with and how we approach problems, and we'll get to know how you collaborate, communicate, and think.\n\n - References - 2 references from people you've worked with who can speak to your impact, working style, and contributions in a professional setting.\n\n\n\n\nABOUT HERON DATA\n\nWe are Heron Data https://www.herondata.io/, a Series A stage company based in New York and London.\n\n - At Heron, we use the latest advances in AI and LLMs to automate document processing.
